DBR24©

Structured professional judgement guidance for the assessment of dog bite risk and development of risk management strategies.

Background

The DBR24© has been developed by researchers at the University of Lincoln following extensive scientific research of the evidence for risk factors for human directed dog aggression. Following systematic review of the scientific literature and survey of professional opinion, an evidence base of risk factors was used to inform the development of structured professional guidance for the assessment of dog bite risk.

What DBR24© assesses

The DBR24© provides a structure for users to evaluate the risk an individual dog, in the care of a specific guardian, may pose to humans from biting. Through the assessment process the DBR24© guidance also assists evaluators in the identification of possible strategies that may mitigate risk.

When to use it

  • Shelter behavior evaluations and rehoming decisions
  • Social care assessments of dog bite risk for safeguarding purposes
  • Behaviour consultations
  • Legal matters involving dangerous dogs

Format

The DBR24© consists of 24 risk items and 3 items relating to possible severity that are to be considered by the evaluator when making an overall judgement of dog bite risk.
